Buried shipping containers are NOT bomb shelters! They are only as strong and effective as the reinforcements and modifications that are installed in them.

Container Underground will not be held responsible for failure of a design or installation researched and provided by the customer. We will offer suggestions, but the design and use will ultimately be the responsibility of the customer. Buyer Beware!

SO YOU WANT TO BURY A CONTAINER
I wanted to and I finally did. The fact that your're reading this means you have at least been thinking about going underground. There are plenty of web sites out there as well as signs on the earth and in the sky that will give you lots of reasons to want to dig in. So I won't even go there.

WHY A CONTAINER?
Shipping containers are relatively cheap, versatile, available, easy to transport, easy to modify, and most importantly fast to set up. It provides a turn-key solution that can be installed in a day.

FULL BURIAL VS. PARTIAL BURIAL
A question that you must ask yourself is what am I protecting against? In a partial burial (buried in a hillside), which is a safer way to go, you have protection of your goods from wind, forest fire, thieves and maybe some earth movement. This makes an excellent choice for storage in forest fire risk areas which is growing rapidly due to drought. With the right modifications, sand bags and air filtering there may be some radiation protection.

Full burial requires extensive modifications with welded steel reinforcements, hatches and ventilation concerns. This is a more expensive solution. But if money isn't a problem then it's definitely do-able. Part of your research should include looking into actual bomb shelter solutions available on the net and comparing costs and benefits. But for those who want it quick and dirty a container is the way to go.

WHAT MODIFICATIONS CAN I MAKE?
Virtually anything you can dream up. A container can be fully outfitted with rooms, hatches, plumbing, electrical, heat and lighting. Multipe containers can be pre-fabed and bolted together on-site with hatchways between them. There are many existing shelter designs out there that can be retrofitted using a reinforced container.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
Obviously the cost depends on the modifications made and the delivery distance. Our operation covers the Pacific Northwest but any container sales company can perform the modifications and delivery. Our turn-key solution prices start around $8,000.00 and up. Hole included! However, the more you do on your end the cheaper it will be. There are also excellent deals in buying land where you pay a couple hundred dollars a month and its yours.
